A Brief Introductory Bio
I have been a musician for over 50 years.
I have been a surgeon for nearly 30.
These two practices define my professional life.
I studied music under Bill Dixon at Bennington College.
I trained in surgery under Dr. William Silen at Harvard Medical School.
WHY DO I PERFORM SURGERY?
I spend my days caring for people. For me, surgery is a compassionate, intense, and intimate act.
It does not matter how many times I have previously performed a certain surgical procedure; what matters is only the present performance; what is happening right here and right now between me and my patient.
All other experience, all other matters recede.
Often the results of that performance add to the light and well-being in this universe. Sometimes there is another result and for some time my days becomes dark as night.
WHY DO I COMPOSE MUSIC?
Music is the fabric of my reality.
Its intention awakens meaning from matter and energy.
Composition is a journey into uncharted realms; discovering and exploring new worlds and ways of being.
I have often been told that there are stories to be heard in my music.
One intent of my work is to transport the listener to a newly imagined time and place and once there have them feel the stories of lives lived there.
Since the origin of human time, stories have inspired dreams and imagination; creating new worlds and lives.
This is what I hope you hear in my music.
My work incorporates the many musical traditions and aesthetic values that have been a part of my life since my childhood in New York City. Some of these influences may be familiar to you and other new and more challenging.
I invite you to share in some of these journeys and explorations with me.
