From the recording this and other worlds
Composed for a larger ensemble consisting of 2 flutes, 2 violins, 2 cellos, 3 basses, multiple synthesized string sections, a horn section of alto saxophone, trumpet and trombone; and percussion
Simple melodic motifs flow from one into another and back evolving into more contemporary influenced harmonies and structures.
I have lived for nearly 20 years in the Southwest US, a region that was formerly part of Mexico.
My daily drive to the hospital takes me across large open stretches of Sonora Desert much of which is tribal land.
This is the intersection of Mexican, Native American and Anglo worlds, simultaneously existing inside of each other.
The poppy harvest no longer puts food on our table.
The region of Mexico where poppies are grown is remote. La Montana in Guerrero State is one of the most impoverished regions of Mexico. In US cities, heroin is disappearing, replaced by cheap Fentanyl, synthesized in China. As a result poppy prices have fallen by 90%.
The climate and terrain are not hospitable for growing many other crops. Many former farmers have left to become migrant labor in other parts of Mexico or undocumented farm workers in the US.
These worlds are not simple places.
